2022 was the first year LGI Homes hosted their internal awards show since the start of the pandemic. They wanted it to be special, momentous, and safe.
Knowing the crowd were going to go all out, I wanted to create a design that made the space feel like an elite awards show, without the cost.
We needed a backdrop to fill a 50’ wide stage, and provide easy access for a couple hundred people to enter and exit from the backstage and the audience over the course of a few hours. Each person would come onstage, collect their award, take a picture with the presenter, and exit. So I wanted to make sure we left as much space as possible for everyone to move around, and make sure each of those moments were perfectly highlighted.
I designed two walls, angled to the right of the stage, and finished with curved ends. This made the entire wall seem wavy, while minimising how much of the wall had to be built on a curve, a very costly expense.
To finish the wall I created a swooping design out of the event’s colours, and a pattern of wood slats, a nod to the architectural culture at the centre of this event. Laying this design across the two staggered walls created a fun optical illusion, making each audience member’s view unique., and animated the room as you moved around the space.
An additional podium and display case for the event made the whole environment cohesive and added dimension to the design..
For the afterparty, we covered the slat design with a graphic printed on hard plastic. This was a very efficient way of transforming the space once again without building a whole new set.
Focusing my attention on creating a strong base structure to the design, allowed for minimal finishes to have a big impact on the overall look of the production.
